Seattle, WA – December, 2024 – Carl Haglund, founder of Columbia Modern Living, has issued a strong statement following the resignation announcement of Seattle City Councilmember Tammy Morales. In light of this news, Haglund underscores the significant neglect faced by his tenants and the broader community in South Seattle.
Haglund stated, "For too long, our community has faced escalating challenges, from gun violence to inadequate support for affordable housing. I have personally witnessed the devastating impacts of these issues on my tenants. Despite her claims of advocating for equity and justice, Tammy Morales consistently failed to address the urgent concerns of those she pledged to serve."
A Community in Crisis
Recent events at one of Columbia Modern Living’s properties, located in South Seattle, reveal a dire reality. The building has been riddled with bullet holes, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty for residents. Despite repeated pleas for intervention, Haglund asserts that Morales and other city officials provided little to no meaningful support.
"While I’ve been fighting to ensure the safety and well-being of my tenants, Councilmember Morales did nothing to alleviate their fears or support the rebuilding of their lives," said Haglund. "Her departure is not a moment of reflection but a reminder of her neglect."
Impact on Residents and Community Safety
The neglect of tenant safety has created a ripple effect throughout the neighborhood, exacerbating feelings of vulnerability and abandonment. "We’ve been left to fend for ourselves while facing life-threatening circumstances," Haglund emphasized.
